Dental restoration methods were born to help overcome dental defects, bring a confident smile as well as restore complete chewing function. Below, IKALAB outlines the popular types of restorations that are being used.

1. Distinguish between fixed restorations and removable restorations

1.1. Fixed tooth restoration

This is a technique of fixing the denture on the jaw frame, or installing it on the abutment of the adjacent tooth that has been ground to create a bridge. After completing treatment, the patient cannot arbitrarily disassemble it at home.

The advantages of the method are high aesthetics, design similar to real teeth, ensuring a close fit to the gums – a tight fit to the tooth root and can restore up to 90% of the chewing function of real teeth. In addition, cleaning with fixed teeth is also easier and more convenient.

However, the product requires high qualifications of the fabrication technician and the performing dentist.

1.2. Removable dental restoration

Removable dental restorations are molded from plastic or porcelain, positioned to match the missing teeth, pressed tightly on a plastic base shaped like real gums. After determining the fit and chewing function, the user can disassemble, clean and reassemble for continued use without the intervention of a dentist.

The advantage of this method is that the price is lower than fixed tooth restoration, prevents misalignment, ensures aesthetics, and quick implementation time.

However, removable restorations cannot restore chewing strength as well as fixed methods, and in some cases can cause gum pain. This method is often applied to the elderly.

2. Common dental restoration techniques

2.1. Dental crowns (Tooth crowns)

Dental crowns are a fixed restoration method with high aesthetics and safety. The finished product closely resembles real teeth. Dental crown (dental crown) technique is indicated in the following cases:

  • Oral diseases: tooth decay, pulpitis, enamel erosion,…
  • Teeth with aesthetic defects: black, yellow, dull teeth, etc.
  • Teeth with physical defects: broken, broken, chipped, bad bite, crooked, underbite,…

Some types of dental crowns: all-ceramic crowns, metal crowns, metal-ceramic crowns, etc. Each type has different standards that require dental restoration technicians to be very meticulous in making.

2.2. Implants

Implant-based porcelain tooth restoration is the most optimal and modern type of fixed restoration today. The implant posts are implanted directly into the jaw like real tooth roots, then porcelain crowns are placed on top. They can replace one or several teeth, or even the entire jaw.

Dental implants do not cause damage to neighboring teeth and are very suitable for oral health. Not only strong, implants are also the optimal method to improve chewing function, aesthetics and safety.

2.3. Apply Veneer

Porcelain Veneers are a method that helps hide defects and improve the appearance of teeth such as worn edges, gapped teeth, cracked teeth, stained teeth, etc. This is one of the most popular types of restorations. in cosmetic dentistry because of its high safety and limited invasion of natural tooth tissue.

However, this method is contraindicated in cases of periodontal disease, severely misaligned teeth, severe tooth decay, pulpitis that requires extraction, etc.

2.4. Dental bridge

A dental bridge is a measure applied when implants cannot be placed. The dentist will use strong teeth surrounding the lost tooth (designed depending on the number) as abutments for the denture. Then, the defective part of the real tooth is worn away, supporting the denture bridge to replace the lost tooth.

2.5. Denture

This is a removable dental restoration technique, usually made from hard or flexible plastic. This method is indicated for people who have lost teeth (usually the elderly), and does not apply to cases where teeth have physical defects.

Depending on the actual situation, the dentist will decide whether to use a full or partial denture. However, dentures can cause problems and pain for new users. In the long term, they can easily become loose and need to be checked regularly. When performing this restoration, the technician or dentist needs to take a detailed and accurate impression of the jaw.
